Facts, Secrets and Easter Eggs in Getting Over It
Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is a mix of frustration, laughs, and life lessons. This game is famous for being really hard, but what many people don’t know is that it’s full of hidden secrets, cool facts, and Easter eggs.
I’ve been playing this game for the previous 7 years, and trust me, there’s so much more to it than just climbing a mountain. Let me share everything I’ve discovered so you can enjoy the game even more.

Who is the Guy in the Pot?
When you play the game, you control a man stuck in a pot. His name is Diogenes. Diogenes was a real Greek philosopher who was famous for living in a big clay jar. The game is like a modern twist on his story.
If you look closely, there are paintings of Diogenes in the background, especially in the furniture section. It’s like the game is saying, This guy has been living the struggle for a long time.
The Golden Pot
The pot you climb in changes colour if you beat the game over and over again. Every time you finish the game, the pot gets a little more golden. If you’re crazy enough to beat the game 50 times yes, 50!, you’ll unlock the ultimate Golden Pot. It’s super shiny and is a great way to show off your dedication.
Sexy Hiking
Did you know Getting Over It is inspired by another game called Sexy Hiking? This older game from 2002 was all about using a hammer to climb over obstacles, just like in Getting Over It.
In fact, the starting tree in Getting Over It is a direct nod to the tree in Sexy Hiking. And if you’re adventurous, you can find the character from Sexy Hiking sitting on a floating rock in the game.
When you reach him, you’ll hear the winning sound from Sexy Hiking. It’s a cool way of saying “thanks” to the game that started it all.
What Happens After 500 Clicks?
If you click your mouse 500 times in the game (and trust me, it’s easy to do when you’re frustrated), Bennett Foddy will pop in and say, “Listen, this is a little awkward, but you’ve clicked the mouse button 500 times now.
I’m going to say you’re gripping the mouse a little bit hard.”
It’s a hilarious reminder to chill out and maybe take a break before you smash your mouse!
The Bad Ending
There’s a part of the game near the top where, if you fall into a specific spot, you get stuck. This is known as the bad ending. Bennett Foddy recorded a custom voice line for this situation, saying, You got so close, but this is past mending. For years, people thought it was impossible to escape this spot, but eventually, some skilled players managed to find a way out.
A Special Gift
The anvil section is one of the trickiest parts of the game. If you spend more than eight minutes trying to get past it a lot of us do, the game drops a little gift box for you. It’s the game’s way of saying, “I know this is hard, but keep going!”
A Hidden Joke in the Hand
The hand holding the hammer looks normal at first. But if you use mods to view it from different angles, you’ll notice something funny there’s a hidden gesture that’s not exactly family-friendly. Bennett Foddy added this as a joke, knowing most players wouldn’t see it.
Don’t Ride the Snake
A snake in the game with a sign that says, DO NOT RIDE. If you ignore the sign and ride the snake, it will send you all the way back to the bottom of the mountain. It’s like a big, mean trick, and it’s inspired by the board game Snakes and Ladders. Lesson learned: always follow the signs.
A Moving Crane
Near the end of the game, a crane gently sways back and forth. Most players don’t notice it because they’re too focused on not falling. But here’s the fun part: game files show that this crane was originally supposed to move more, maybe to make the game even harder. Thankfully, they decided to keep it simple.
Speedrunning Surprise
Early game versions had a feature that detected if someone was speedrunning. It would play a special sound at the start of their run. This feature didn’t make it into the final game, but it shows how much Bennett Foddy cared about the speedrunning community.
Unused Voice Lines
There are over 30 voice lines in the game files that didn’t make it into the final version. Some of them sound like helpful tips, like “Sometimes when you want to go high, you have to lower yourself down first.” These lines give us a glimpse of what the game could have been.
What’s the Hammer?
The hammer in the game is based on a real tool called a Yosemite hammer, which is used for climbing. But in the game, it’s way bigger, more like a sledgehammer. This makes it feel like it belongs in the strange world of Getting Over It.
A Real Lighthouse
The lighthouse you see at the start of the game is based on a real lighthouse in Biloxi, Mississippi. Bennett Foddy confirmed this, and you can even find the reference photo he used in the game files.
Small Details You Might Have Missed
- The Hat: The snowman at the top of the mountain has a hat, and it can actually fall off.
- Graffiti: There are random bits of graffiti and carvings, like a heart on the back of a rock.
- Doghouse: There’s a doghouse with the name Sam on it. Who’s Sam? Nobody knows!
- Smiling Rock: One of the rocks in the background has a little smile. It’s subtle but funny.
What’s Inside the Pot?
Ever wonder what’s inside Diogenes’ pot? According to Bennett Foddy, it’s filled with bodily fluids to protect his legs. It’s gross, but it makes the game even weirder.

Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is so much more than a hard game. It’s full of hidden secrets, funny moments, and little details that make it special. Whether you’re playing for the first time or trying for the Golden Pot, knowing these facts can make the journey even more fun.
